Situated in the geographic center of Marin County, Nicasio was home to the Coast Miwok village of Echatamal and likely named for a Tamal Indian and alcalde, Guequistabal, who was baptized as Nicasio at Mission Dolores in 1802. As European settlers arrived, many established themselves as dairy ranchers and timbermen. Soon a town square began to take shape, complete with a merchandise store, a butcher shop, two saloons, a racetrack, a livery stable, a Catholic church, and a luxurious three-story hotel. These pioneers aspired to make Nicasio the county seat, a bid that was ultimately lost by a single vote in 1863. The land reserved for civic buildings was repurposed as a baseball diamond, which at one time hosted semipro games and continues to serve local little leaguers. The Rancho Nicasio now stands in place of the hotel, yet the town otherwise appears untarnished by time. Not surprisingly, a number of residents have roots tracing back to Nicasioas founders, with newcomers drawn to its pastoral charm and a lifestyle in deep contrast to that of nearby San Francisco.
Tucked alongside a harbor on Long Island's north shore, Mount Sinai has long attracted residents and visitors. It was the site of an early European settlement in 1664 and the embarkation point of the Revolutionary War foray into enemy territory by Maj. Benjamin Tallmadge, a member of Gen. George Washington's Setauket spy ring. Mount Sinai was a farming and seafaring community in the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s. In 1891, it became the site of the "sanitary resort" known as the Crystal Brook Park Association. Later, it drew an early community of artists and photographers who captured the natural beauty of the area. Mount Sinai portrays these and many other events of historical and cultural interest.

Each photograph in Stony Brook: State University of New York is accompanied by descriptive narrative that illustrates the defining events in the history of the campus, including the university 's founding at Planting Fields, the creation of the Stony Brook campus, Pres. John S. Toll 's recruitment of top faculty, Pres. John Marburger III 's expansion of the university 's vision, and current president Dr. Shirley Strum Kenny 's commitment to the state 's original mandate "to stand with the finest in the country. "

In large parts of the world, the reduction in the viability of agriculture and rural areas is an escalating problem. Sustainable Land Management offers a contemporary overview of the strategies employed to cope with the marginalisation of agriculture, through analyses of case studies and regional trends in marginalisation. The authors argue that complexities and driving forces governing marginalisation are not always the same across nations and regions due to climate, geography, economics, legislation and political status. This book illustrates in what form these complexities exist, and how these unravel at the national and regional levels. As the need to understand and cope with marginalisation processes has developed, the concept of multi-functionality has also gained a vital place in the string of coping strategies. This work contributes essential knowledge for the development of marginalisation mitigation policy actions across the globe. Informative and well-documented, this book will appeal to those researching and working in the fields of agricultural and resource economics, rural geography, environmental governance and sustainable development.
